The AncestorOS fan chart on a phone, showing five generations of ancestors

Built for the places research actually happens

Family history rarely happens at a desk. It happens when an aunt starts talking, at a reunion, at the archive counter, and on the drive home. The app covers those moments, and the website is still there for the long evenings.

A list of family memories in the app, including a shoebox of letters and a story about Sunday bread

At the kitchen table

When the stories start, write them down

Open a memory, type what you are hearing, and tag the people it is about. The shoebox of letters, the recipe, the story about the wheelwright's yard: each one lands on the right person in your tree.

  • Write memories and tag family members
  • Photograph old prints with your camera
  • Browse the tree and a five-generation fan chart
The people list in the app, with living and remembered family members

At the family reunion

Add the cousin before you forget which side they are on

Search everyone in your tree, add a new person in a few taps, and connect them to their parents on the spot. By the time you are home, they are already on the web.

  • Add and edit people
  • Connect parents, children and spouses
  • Work out exactly how two people are related

In the archive

Log the search while the film is still in the reader

Record what you searched, where, and what you found, including the searches that turned up nothing. Photograph the document and link it to the person it is about.

  • Research log entries, found or not
  • Document capture, linked to people
  • Citations, obituaries, burials and clippings
The app home screen, listing upcoming birthdays and anniversaries

Between visits

Birthdays and anniversaries come to you

The home screen shows who is coming up, and the app can remind you on the day: a great-grandmother's birthday, a wedding at the parish church, ninety-nine years on.

  • Reminders for birthdays and anniversaries
  • Research tasks and a timeline of events
  • Discoveries to accept or dismiss

For professional genealogists

Client work does not stop when you leave the office. On the Pro plan, the app keeps the practice side of your research within reach.

Professional tools need the Pro plan. Creating invoices and full client records stay on the web.

Time tracking
Start the timer at the courthouse. It keeps running while the phone is in your pocket.
Expenses
Photograph the receipt for the copy fee before you leave the counter.
Invoices
See what is overdue, and mark an invoice sent or paid when the check arrives.
Clients and appointments
Look up a client, add a new one, and check your next appointment.

Questions about the app

The app is free to download. It works with your AncestorOS account, which needs an active Hobbyist or Pro plan. There is nothing extra to buy for the app, and every plan starts with a 7-day free trial.
Not yet. Create your account at ancestoros.com, then sign in on your phone with the same email and password.
Yes. The app and the website use the same account and the same records. Add a person on your phone and they are in your tree on the web a moment later.
Mostly. Once your tree has loaded, you can read it without a connection, and records you add or edit are saved on the phone and sync when you are back online. Uploading photos and documents needs a connection.
The iPhone app is built and on its way to the App Store, and we will link it here as soon as it is live. Until then, AncestorOS works in Safari on any iPhone.
Yes. Allow notifications when the app asks, and it will remind you of birthdays and anniversaries in your tree on the day. The reminders are scheduled on your phone.
